The population has been slowly turning away from expensive medications, creams and ointments to cure various skin conditions and turning to preventative care and alternative healthy treatments.

Because of acne’s ‘popularity’ in all ages, both sexes and every race it is no exception to people exploring natural home remedies. One such remedy is in the healing and soothing properties of green tea.

About Green Tea:

While many teas are fermented, green tea is instead steamed shortly after harvest. This prevents oxidation of its leaves and loss of anti-oxidant properties. Because of this processing difference Green Tea is valuable for many ailments – not just acne.

Camellia Sinensis, proper name for green tea extract, contains a high content of Polyphenol (a key antioxidant). The antioxidents help the body fight free radicals that cause cell and tissue damage.

Green tea serves many purposes. Creams and tinctures are used as anti-bacterial aids.

Green Tea also assists to moderate hormonal activity. And, since acne is often caused by an increase in hormones, which produce excess oil that clog your pores, green tea is valuable in the aid of controling acne breakouts.

Green tea also has very few potential side effects especially when compared to other acne products and medications.

A mixture of green tea with Honeysuckle is called acne tea in China but it’s primary purpose is to rid the body of toxins.

Green tea is readily available and can be purchased in most herbal or holistic stores. You can also buy it online (as with anything these days).

Drinking green tea helps cleanse your body from the inside out. Using green tea creams helps cure and prevent acne from the outside in. No matter how you use it, green tea serves many purposes, and is a viable alternative to prescriptive medications.

There are many products designed to treat acne – over-the-counter cleansers, creams, and medicated pads, as well as prescribed medications through a dermatologist. Yet the increasing popularity of natural remedies has become prevalent in treating many common conditions and acne is no exception.

Here are some of the most common natural remedies and why they are fast becoming the preferred treatments by the masses.

Water. Water is used to hydrate the body, which, of course, hydrates the skin. Your skin is the largest organ in the human body, and must be properly hydrated to work correctly and serve its purpose. This is accomplished in two ways: by washing the face, which hydrates the surface of the skin, and by drinking water, which hydrates the entire body from the inside out. Drinking plenty of water will keep your skin looking and feeling healthy.

Doctors tell us we should drink six to eight eight-ounce glasses of water a day. While this sounds like a lot of water, think of what it can do for your body. In addition to improving skin tone and texture, it can stimulate cell growth and will help all your organs work correctly. It also helps filter out unwanted substances that can be harmful to your skin.

Water is also a crucial component deep within your skin. It provides the basis for a soft, smooth, and healthy complexion and will help you look more youthful. Though very little water is stored in the outer layers of your skin, this moisture is important and is constantly removed by outside elements such as sun and wind.

Sun and wind dries your skin, removing moisture and irritating the surface. When this occurs, pre-existing acne can become even more irritated, prolonging the problem. While irritation won’t directly cause more acne to form, it can worsen the problem. It is important to keep proper moisture in the skin.

Perhaps one of the most common myths is that oily skin does not need moisture. This is not true. Just because skin is oily, does not mean it is moisturized. By cleansing the skin, you are wiping away excess oil, and by moisturizing it, you are helping it remain smooth thereby decreasing your chances of irritation. Properly hydrating the skin not only promotes and stimulates cell growth, but also helps the other organs of the body work together. If properly hydrated, the skin will not wrinkle or sag as easily, and will appear youthful for a longer period of time.

Though water is not the only natural remedy for the skin, it is the most important. Without it, the skin could not do its job in keeping the rest of the body in check. Keep reading for more natural acne remedies!

Take note, as a general rule I do not recommend skin scrubs for facial skin. Not since a friend told me that she was certain all that gritty scrubing over all those years was likely the cause of her deep acne scarring.

But, on tougher body parts there’s nothing wrong with a gentle skin scrub to slough off dead skin cells, to rejeuvenate the skin’s surface and get the blood flowing closer to the surface, and to remove bacteria that may be lurking just beneath that top layer of dead skin.

At any rate, ’scrubs’ started 20 years or so ago as a natural way to polish skin. The whole trend started as chunks of finely ground apricot pits in a creamy base that was rubbed in a circular motion on your skin.

Now think about that for a moment. That’s just like rubbing sand in your face.

Face scrubs may not do damage once or twice over the span of your life, but twice a day, every day for decades?

Hard to say if it causes any real damage or not, but common sense does seem to dictate that this isn’t a good idea.

Lately I’ve seen some new [tag]acne scrubs[/tag] on the scene and they’re called ‘micro’ scrubs. Probably far more effective and a lot less damaging. Again, I’m not here to tell you either way which is best for you or not good at all – this is purely an exercise in thinking outloud over the matter…

With all that rambled out of me, I did run across some information about making your own [tag]skin scrubs[/tag] today. I found it because this time next week I’ll be in a bathing suit and my skin is not looking it’s finest. I thought an invigorating scrub or refining body mask (is there such a thing?) might be a good idea.

So here you have it, make your own skin scrub and leave your (body) skin feeling smooth all week (or so the brilliant advertising guys say).

Home made scrubs have a base of either sugar or salt (the scrubbing part), as well as oils (for lather, movement and moisturization).

If you’re making your own scrub you’ll first have to decide on sugar or salt. Salt is more invigorating and bacteria zapping, but could cause minor itching and stinging if you have any cuts or [tag]acne[/tag] in the scrub zone.

Next, choose your oil. Olive oil is handy (don’t substitute vegetable oil as it’s super greasy), mineral oils (such as baby oil) clogs the pores, a good quality massage oil is perfect (if it contains grape seed oil or sweet almond oil all the better!)

None of those on hand? Check your cabinets for pure cocoa butter or shea butter.

Making the scrub is easy. Mix sugar (or salt) to your oil until you have a thick paste.

You’re done!

Just joking. You probably want to add a few more ingredients to make your [tag]acne scrub[/tag] unique. You can add a light fragrance (if you have soap making supplies on hand), a little liquid hand soap will give you more lather during use, some baking soda will help tone your skin’s surface, or some honey if your skin is dry and flaky.

You’re only going to make enough of this stuff for one week’s use as we’re not going to add any preservatives to the mix.
Once your [tag]skin scrub[/tag] has a nice thick consistency scoop it into a small covered tupperware container and leave it in the bath or shower area so you remember to use it.

You can also make your skin scrub into a personal sized beauty bar but you’ll need to use cocoa or shea butter instead of a liquid oil and your mix will be decidely thicker. The trick is to gently warm the shea or cocoa butter first, make the paste then pack it into a soap mold. If you don’t have a soap mold you can still use a food grade plastic container. When your scrub paste is packed away neatly into it’s mold stick it in the freezer for a few hours – after it has solidified it is ready for use.

If your scrub bars melt and make a mess when thawing you’ve used too much oil.

If your scrub bars crumble and break, not enough oils.

If either of those situations happen, don’t fret, just mix it all up again adding more oil or more scrub ingredients as required.

And if you proceed with caution and only use the finest products you might like to see the best deals on the newest skin scrubs here.

Do you make your own soap? A friend of mine just passed on a few recipes to me that she swears by.

I checked out the list and they look like natural acne fighting ingredients to me. At any rate, as long as you follow standard soap making procedures (anything with lye should age 6 weeks before use) these can’t harm your skin and may clear up any bouts of acne – current or future!

Oatmeal and honey, a natural astringent soap, and a refreshing acne mask recipes follow….

Natural Acne Fighter – Oatmeal and Honey Soap

All measurements, excluding honey and oatmeal are in weight, not bulk.

5.5 oz coconut oil
5 oz. shortening
3 oz. lard
1 oz. cocoa butter
1 oz. palm oil
1 oz. apricot kernel oil
2.5 oz. lye
6 oz. water
1 tbs. honey
1/2 cup blended oatmeal

You can also try this melt and pour soap if you have glycerin on hand, although this starts to get rather expensive. You may find that buying tea tree oil soap from the health food shop much more reasonable…

Natural Antiseptic Soap

(This works because the tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic and many cases of acne are spread by overactive bacteria growth.)

2 cups glycerin soap base
2 tbs. tea tree essential oil

Finally here’s an herbal mask. I know that cucumber and parsley are known tighten and purify agents so if you’re looking to draw toxins out of loose or aging skin this is a 10+!

Cucumber Refresher Mask

1 tbs. cucumber
1 tbs. parsley
1 tbs. yogourt

Throw it all in a blender and whirl it together until fluffy.
Lay down and apply the mixture to clean skin.
Rest for 15 minutes, then gently rinse off by splashing warm water on your face.

That’s all for today! Have a great week!
