I have been sharing our results all over the internet these days since I’m so excited about derma rolling. You may also have seen the special on Rachel Ray about this although I believe she called it microneedling.

Here is our story…one 15 year old girl with forehead breakouts that prescription gels and other treatments couldn’t cure. And one mom, 46 years of age with acne scars, large pores and wrinkles. The derma roller made massive improvements for both of us.

We started out with a micro-needle derma roller at .5mm that we bought for $15 each.

Basically all we did was roll the device over clean skin in multiple directions, 10 times each way (up, down, sideways). The entire process took 10 minutes for each face.

Next you’ll want to put your acne medication on (or moisturizer if you’re rolling to get rid of wrinkles or scarring). Do this on a small test area first as your lotions, gels or medicated ointments will be extra effective on freshly rolled facial skin.

Your skin then goes into super-absorption mode and sucks all that lotion deep into the layers of your skin. Because of the micro-needling you skin will also send healing collagen to the surface of your skin. Within a few days we both saw major improvements.

Teenagers might want to repeat the process every 5-7 days (that’s what worked for us), mature skinned women the same. My mature skin peeled and flaked in the evening where acne scars were present but a gentle wash and some moisturizer fixed it by morning. Within the month my acne scars were almost non-existant and my pores were noticably smaller.

what gets rid of light brown acne scars??? its not that severe but its just like a brown spot thats redish brown.

What would work the best: cocoa butter, vitamin e oil, tea tree oil, glycolic acid, or neosporin scar solutions???

Feel free to name more than one.

Note from the Editor:

For the past few months I have been using a device called the Derma Roller to diminish acne scarring from my teenage years. I got the idea when I was at the medispa and saw a treatment that increases your skin’s collagen production. Basically you roll this device on your face (or any place else you have scarring) and tiny, tiny holes are made in your skin’s top layer. The premise is that these tiny holes are interpreted by your skin as wounds and all the natural collagen, fibrin and healing defenses are sent to the surface to repair the outer layer.

For older skin and at the spa, a synthetic collagen is then placed on the skin and is readily absorbed. At home I finish my dermarolling session with a high-end moisturizer. The results? Not only is the acne scarring subsiding but a frown line between my eyebrows is literally 1/2 gone. I use my roller once per week – takes about 15 minutes to do – and I plan on using it for rest of my life.

There’s more to this. My teenage daughter also uses the dermaroller now. Not for scars but for acne and her reason is similar but also once those small punctures have been put into your skin any treatment or medication applied to the surface is more readily absorbed. She had a breakout of whiteheads on her foreheard which the doctor prescribed a gel to clear up. At first the gel didn’t appear to work but once she dermarolled the whiteheads were gone in two days.

You don’t have to go the medispa to buy an expensive dermaroller. We purchased ours from a medical supply seller in Hong Kong – direct from ebay – between $9-40. I personally don’t know why the range in prices as the two we use were in the $15 range and they both work great. My daughter and I both use the .5mm diameter of microneedle and will never go back to high end spa treatments or medication.

Help from our readers:

I have this acne scar from a pimple I had about 1.5 years ago on my cheek. At first it was very noticeable. Lately it has been getting less deep however it still is kind of noticeable. I have tried Vitamin E oil and Aloe Vera, and it works on all acne scars except this one. Well, the Vitamin E oil helped the scar…but not a lot…any advice?
