This isn’t really one of my topics, but I just read an article about this and thought I should share the information here in case you have a baby in your life that is experiencing acne…
Recognizing Baby Acne
If your baby has tiny bumps on his or her face at birth this is likely not baby acne, but milia. Milia bumps are not related to acne and they will disappear within a few weeks. However, if your baby develops (and wasn’t born with) bumps on his or her skin, they may have baby acne. It can show up on the facial or back area.
You’ll easily recognize it as smaller than teenage or adult whiteheads (on that beautiful tender skin) that may or may not be red and inflamed in the surrounding area.
What Causes ?
A few common causes include spittle, regurgitated milk, use of soap not formulated to sensitive skin, or clothing that has been washed in cheap laundry detergent.
As with , it can also be caused by a skin allergy or irritation, internal medication (by you if you’re breast feeding or your baby), or a hormonal change. Contact with an oil substances such as petroleum, vitamin E or mineral oil can also cause baby acne.
How can your baby be suffering a hormonal change? Again, if you’re breast feeding any medications or hormonal change you’re going through are passed onto your baby. (Please consult with your doctor before taking any medications, or making any changes to your breast feeding routine.)
When Will Baby Acne Go Away?
Baby acne may come and go during the first six months of life, but in most cases it clears up after a few weeks - especially if you have determined the cause and made corrections.
Can I Speed Up the Process with an acne treatment?
Removing the cause, rather than treating the problem is the best bet for baby acne. Remember a baby’s skin is ultra sensitive so you wouldn’t want to use any topical cleansers or scrubs on a baby’s skin or you’ll likely end up with a worse problem than you started with! Discover the cause of the acne and remove it, then wash baby’s face with a gentle facecloth with mild baby soap once per day.
Wow…I didn’t know babies could get acne.
Hmm…well, since I used to suffer from Acne severely and was able to cure it naturally with changing and adhering to a healthy diet (fruits and veggies…exclusively) do you think that if parents notice their infants getting acne….it might help if they fed their kids more things like fruit smoothies, juices or stuff like vegetable broths as well in addition to what you mentioned above?
